| 内容記述 | This study aims to clarify the spatial characteristics of migration in Uttar Pradesh, India. Using data from the Census of India, the inter-state migration is analyzed by dividing it into in-and out-migration, and the attributes of migrants are examined in terms of (1) sex, (2) migration patterns, and (3) reasons for migration. In-migration analysis revealed that the former residence of migrants who entered the state is mostly in those adjacent to Uttar Pradesh, such as Bihar, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh, which indicates that such migration tends to be completed within a relatively small area. When the attributes of migrants in in-migration are examined by state of previous residence, differences are found in the attributes of migrants by state. Regarding the out-migration, the destination states are spread over a wider area than the former residence of in-migration. In particular, a noticeable out-migration is observed toward states with a high degree of economic development, such as those of Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and Haryana. Examining the attributes of migrants by state, while migration of single men from rural to urban areas for the purpose of employment is observed, that for non-economic reasons cannot be ignored in some states. However, the attributes of migration in Uttar Pradesh are complex as the attributes of migrants differ depending on the destination state, even for the same non-economic reasons. |
