Previous studies can be broadly classified into four categories: （1）Studies that analyze the distribution and trends of local industries on a national scale; （2）studies on the response of local industries to socioeconomic change s in the environment; （3）studies on the regional existence foundations of local industries; and （4）studies on the role of non-business entities in the competitiveness and existence of local industries. A notable characteristic of these studies is that there has been much discussion regarding the competitiveness and existence of local industries. Moreover, as individual enterprises develop their own strategies and businesses, the heterogeneity of firms is increasing. Therefore, the new characteristic of an increasing number of studies is that they emphasize on the analysis of individual enterprises and examine their strategies and business in detail. Based on a review of previous studies, four issues relevant for future studies are as follows: First, it is imperative to examine the trends of local industries in the global economy from a macro perspective. Second, only a few studies have focused on the overseas expansion of enterprises in local industries. Third, it is crucial to pay attention to domestic globalization trends, such as the increase in foreign worker.
